The Hearing Impaired Unit
The Hearing Impaired Unit (HIU) at Sanders Draper School is the only senior school provision in Havering for hearing impaired students.
The HIU consists of 6 dedicated, committed and enthusiastic staff; communicators and support staff.
We work very closely together to support our students and allow them to access the school and national curriculum in every way.
We have the capacity of accepting 12 hearing impaired students who range from being profoundly deaf to having a mild hearing loss. Some wear hearing aids, some a cochlear implant, whilst others prefer to wear nothing. It is our job to work with these students and cater for their individual needs.
We also work closely with the subject staff to ensure that the work taught is accessible for our students and adapted if necessary.
In addition to the school curriculum, we also offer a “Signing Club” run at lunch times where students are able to learn the basics of British Sign Language (BSL). Furthermore, both students and staff alike have the opportunity to sit BSL exams, instructed by fully qualified BSL assessors on the school premises. Indeed, we have a very high pass rate – our latest was 100%.
Our Unit is also unique in the fact that we boast the only “Signing Choir” in Havering. We have performed at many prestigious events, including the Lord Mayor’s Show, the Sanders Draper Awards Evening at the Queens Theatre, The Jack Petchey Awards Evening, the Speak Out Challenge and the CEME Centre.
We have also extended our performances into the local community to Infant and Junior Schools, Old People’s Homes, and the Civic Carol Concert at the Town Hall. We have even entered the TV Programme “Britain’s Got Talent”.
Whilst our aim is for the students to remain in the classroom, we recognise the need that sometimes it is necessary for the student to benefit from 1-1 tuition with the help from our specialised equipment. We cater for each student’s individual needs.
We endeavour to nurture and develop our students from Year 7 up to Year 11 in the hope that they leave as secure, mature, well –rounded and positive individuals ready for the futures ahead of them.
