The Careers Department

For young people to become 'successfully independent' and for them to be able to make the transition from school into the world of work, training and Further or Higher Education, they need to be self aware, able to make informed, realistic decisions and to act upon those decisions. This is not an easy task when the options available are increasingly competitive and complex.

The School provides a well established Careers Education programme in all years which helps prepare students for the choices ahead.

Aims of the Department

Careers Education at The Sanders Draper School is aimed at developing the five capabilities below:

To make informed decisions now and for the future drawing on self-knowledge.
To make informed decisions now and for the future by making effective use of information and guidance.
To make and implement action plans.
To develop and demonstrate key and employability skills.
To learn through experience of a range of work related activities.

Outcomes

By the end of the following Key Stages all students will:
- KS3 Have a greater awareness of themselves (qualities, abilities, weaknesses, limitations)
- Know where the Careers Centre is and have accessed some information there.
- Be aware of the implications of GCSE options.
- KS4 Chosen an appropriate route and acted to secure this option, having researched the necessary information, advice and guidance.
- Be aware of the options post-16 and which of them might be suitable for them, the vast majority having participated in Work Experience.
- Know where the Careers Centre is and who the school Careers Co-ordinator is.

Connexions also support the school. Personal Careers Advisers offer unbiased support and guidance to young people facing career decisions in Year 11. Students have Careers Interviews and take part in other activities with the Personal Advisers, to help them focus on appropriate progression routes.

Work Experience

In Years 10, the Careers Education programme is complemented by the school’s Work Experience Placement Scheme.

7th June - 18th June 2010

The work experience programme is a government initiative in which all Year 10 pupils are required to participate. Overseen by the school, all placements are processed through a company called Havering Business and Education Partnership Limited (HBEP). As the processing is both complex and time consuming it is imperative that deadlines are adhered to. In addition, family vacations should not be taken during the work experience period as this is officially classed as term time.

Students may choose one of two routes when deciding on their work placement. They can either accept a job allocated by HBEP or alternatively, may opt for a private placement arranged independently. Students will be given appropriate responsibilities and will normally work the same hours as other staff, possibly including weekends. As companies offer their support voluntarily, the government stipulates that no payment be forthcoming.

In the case of private placements, both the school and HBEP need to verify the company’s suitability and ensure that it meets all government requirements before approval is sanctioned.
Work Experience Coordinator – Mrs L Woolford.

Careers information is available from a regularly up-dated careers library within the Main School Library. The Careers KUDOS software package is available to students on the school network, as well as Fast Tomato on the Internet. Higher Education guidance is linked to the local colleges and is assisted by the Careers Co-ordinator - Mr John Davis.

Dear Colleague,

Next Step – The HAVERING Careers Event

I am writing to tell you about this event that will take place on Tuesday 30 June from 3.30pm – 7.30pm.

The event is aimed primarily at young people in year 10 and their parents/carers and will be concentrating on providing Information and Advice, not acting as a recruitment exercise.

Young people in year 11 and 12 who do not have an offer of further education, training or employment for next year are also invited to attend.

Havering College of Further and Higher Education have kindly offered to host the event at their Ardleigh Green Campus.

Exhibitors include Barking, Havering and Redbridge Colleges; Aim Higher; London Borough of Havering (various departments); Army; NHS; Police: Kier Construction; Apprenticeships; etc.

In addition there will be a series of seminars for parents and pupils on Options Post 16 and Higher Education.

We would like to ask for your assistance in publicising this event and distributing invitations to relevant pupils. To this end I will be asking your Connexions Personal Adviser to liaise with your careers co-ordinator (to whom I have copied this letter) to distribute flyers.  If you are able to put information about the event on your website or via parent mail we would be grateful.

We will be delighted should you or any members of your staff wish to attend.

If you would like to discuss the event further or have any queries please contact Geoff Evans at Havering Connexions (01708 746401) or Julie Surridge at Havering College FHE (01708 462893)

Yours truly,

Brian Willmore
